Celebrating the 2010 Winter Olympics

Kati-flying-poster

Kati from Canada is flying  into Whistler to watch the Winter Olympic Games.

With Kati the Butterfly Girl being a super fit athlete herself and holding the record for the fastest flying Butterfly Girl, she is super excited about the Winter Olympics being held in BC Canada.

Kati is on a very important mission – to raise the awareness of the importance of butterflies to our eco system and encouraging kids to Go Outdoors and discover the Magic Mother Nature has to offer…

Connecting Kids to Nature…

Kati-11

Kids are spending less time outdoors than ever before. Kati and all her Little Humbug friends get kids super excited about nature and help them see the outdoors as a fantastical playground. I believe if you instill a love of nature in a child, they will want to protect it. You first need to get the child outside and enthused about nature. When children and nature mix, something magical happens. All children deserve that Magic in their lives.

Lets Go outside… Kati shows kids how to make a Snow Angel

Lying flat on the snow, Kati moves her arms and legs back and forth, with lots of giggles…

…to create her very own Snow Angel

Although Butterfly Girls can’t normally fly in extreme cold weather, they still love to play outdoors-especially in the snow.  Kati the Canadian Butterfly Girl has been given magical crystals (from Jasmine-the seed keeper and leader of the Little Humbugs) to help her fly through even the most treacherous snow storms.

Monarch Butterflies in Winter

When I heard that the Monarch Butterflies winter habitat was under threat, my first thought was how can I help.

That’s when I decided to create Kati the Canadian Butterfly Girl. Kati is just like my other book characters- The Little Humbugs, only she is my little Canadian Nature warrior – educational doll, helping to raise awareness of the importance of butterflies and in particular, the Monarch Butterfly.

WIN a Kati Doll

To celebrate the 2010 Winter Olympics being held in BC where I now live and was inspired to write about the Little Humbugs, I’ve decided to give away 5 Canadian Dolls.

To Win a Kati Doll just leave a comment telling me why being outdoors in the winter time is special to you. My daughter will help me choose 5 winners. The winners will be announced and contacted via email on the opening day of the 2010 Olympic Games.

For every Award Winning Kati doll sold, a tree will be planted in the conservation project ‘Trees for Monarchs operated by the Global ReLeaf organization(American Forests). A certificate is included with every doll.

  • Connecting Kids to Nature
  • Educational and Fun
  • Helping to protect the Monarch Butterflies
  • Planting a Tree for every doll sold
  • Doll comes in a chrysalis just like a real butterfly
  • No wasteful packaging-the chrysalis is the packaging

As the monarch is threatened by deforestation of its winter habitat in the fir forests, this is a great way to teach kids about endangered species and motivate them to get outdoors and explore Mother Nature.

Please leave your comment on why being outdoors in the winter is so special to you, thanks!

being outside in the winter is special because it is so fresh and white and cold i feel like my spirit is being purified and sparkly clean and fresh.

These are such lovely dolls – I’m so happy to have found them! Last year, when my daughter was approaching her 3rd birthday, she prayed everyday for months that God would make her a butterfly and give her wings. When we would ask if she wanted pretend wings she’d very seriously tell us “no…I want to be a real butterfly that flies”. She received a beautiful pair of large wings for her birthday and, while she’s enjoyed them, they never quite were enough. They weren’t the real wings she wanted. She loves anything with butterflies, fairies, pixies or tinks.

For us, being outdoors is a year round priority. While it’s certainly easier in the summer time, we’ve learned how to get out and enjoy it through our cold, wet winters. We all have rain gear and hats that let us go puddle jumping, walk our neighborhood, hike thru our forests and play in the rare snow. Thankfully our children’s school believes just as strongly that kids need fresh air and get them outside unless it’s pouring down rain.

My girls are avid Little Humbugs fans, they especially loved the photos of Kati making a snow angel!

We, like Gina, make it a priority to get the girls outdoors every day. Although this winter it’s become a bit of a challenge. We recently moved to Fargo, ND and have had some unbelievably cold days so our goal has been how do we safely get the girls outdoors, even for a little bit, each day.

Having little children you are able to see the snow from a different perspective. It’s not a nuisance to navigate through anymore; it’s a fairy snow fort, a lovely snow angel, a sugar mountain… the excitement is infectious!

Hi Marghanita!

Hannah and I love being outdoors in all the seasons…but in the winter we make sure that we build as many snowbuddies as possible! Ever since she was a toddler we have had so much fun rolling together our snowballs and turning them into happy snowbuddies! We like to give each one something special…like a fancy rock neclace, or a pine cone hairdo.

By the time we’re finished…our cheeks are rosy and our hearts are full of happy memories!

We love the Humbugs and Hannah would be thrilled to add Kati to her collection!

Cheers
Kia

Going outdoors in the winter is special for one reason: snow! Snowflakes for my baby daughter to eat, snowballs for my older son to throw, snowmen for my younger son to build all make me smile. I love when the snow dusts everything with its magic.

What a wonderful idea and perfect way to celebrate the outdoors and Canadian Olympic spirit! Kati is gorgeous – I’m sure she’ll continue to inspire us, like all of her butterfly pals. =) I love spending time outdoors during winter because it is just so peaceful. The snow seems to hold everything safe in a magical hug, while the flowers, trees and even animals have time to rest and prepare for the new spring. To me, winter is when nature reflects on all the great things she does. Our only job is to enjoy and appreciate it!
Thanks again for spreading the messages you do – you’re a true nature warrior!

My daughter got her first LIttle Humbug for Christmas (Nika) and absolutely adores her. She would be over the moon to have Kati as a special friend too. We love Canadian winters………making snowmen with carrot noses & raisin eyes, toboganning, skating, hiking in the snowy woods, feeding the winter birds…….even shovelling the driveway can be fun when done as a family!

Jennifer Johnson January 7, 2010 at 12:16 pm

What an adorable doll — and a wonderful contest! Although our favorite season is summer, our family still loves playing outdoors in the winter. What we love best is to go sledding in our backyard, and then to build a campfire in our firepit. We build “snow seats” and roast marshmallows outside while we drink our hot cocoa.

Hi Wendy, lovely to hear from you. Snow angels, sugar mountains, fairy snow forts-I love them all-how magical – I can just see your girls dancing about in the snow. Moving is hard at the best of times, in winter-eek! Hope your all settled in.
So thrilled your girls enjoyed Kati’s photos. Let your girls know there’s more Butterfly Girl fun in the snow being posted next week.
Thanks for a wonderful comment.

Hi Gina
Thanks for your great comment. Pretend play is such an important part of childhood. I just love to hear about girls wanting to be butterflies. They are such magical and enchanting creatures-what child wouldn’t want to flutter around flying from one flower to the next. I agree, as long as you are properly wrapped up you can play outdoors whatever the weather. It’s great to hear your school recognizes the importance of outdoor play-I wish there were more like it!
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kia, how lovely to hear from you. I love the idea of dressing your snowbuddies with stone necklaces-will have to give this a try at the weekend. Say hi to Hannah for me. You must send in one of her paintings or a photo of one of your snowbuddies to the Little Humbugs Art Gallery. Enjoy your weekend outdoors!

Marghanita January 8, 2010 at 1:27 am

Hi mamajoules, thanks for sharing your family winter fun, we love the snow too-there are so many fun things to do with children in the snow. Happy snowmen building!

Marghanita January 8, 2010 at 1:27 am

Hi Jess, what a wonderful comment-I love your description” The snow seems to hold everything safe in a magical hug, while the flowers, trees and even animals have time to rest and prepare for the new spring”. Thanks Jessica, from one nature warrior to another!x

Marghanita January 8, 2010 at 1:28 am

I agree with the snow shovelling-we have a long driveway so it’s less work and more fun when everyone joins in. Thrilled to hear your daughter loves Nika-hopefully when the snow has melted you can all go on a rock hunt together! Thank you so much for posting your comment.

Marghanita January 8, 2010 at 1:28 am

Hi Jennifer. There’s something so primal and wonderful about spending time around a fire with family or friends. Our kids love to toast marshmallows too! Thank you for sharing.

Marghanita, we LOVE being outside in Winter! Whilst its not as cold in our part of the world, we adore: watching our breath go all “foggy” on cold mornings, sliding along the grass on frosty mornings, sketching the outlines of “skeleton” trees, rugging up (we don’t often get to do that either!), lighting bonfires and toasting marshmallows, listening to the rain on the roof at night, catching rain drops on your tongue, jumping in enormous puddles, listening to the frantic toots of Sydney’s ferries hopelessly lost on foggy mornings, having the courage to stand under a tree and give it a push to release all the captive raindrops (umbrella recommended!). I know Grace would just adore to give Kati a Sydney home. much love. xx

Marghanita January 10, 2010 at 11:17 pm

Hi Caroline, your winters sound delicious…. beautifully written. We too love the rain, it reminds us of Scotland. Here in the Okanagan we don’t get much rain but plenty of snow! Thank you so much for sharing your winter fun. Much love x

Being outside in the winter time is special to me because I get to spend time with my kids, building snowman, sledding, and having a good ‘ole’ fashioned snowball fight. When we finish we always go inside for a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. You have to take any and all opportunities teach them about the outdoors and enjoy nature.

Claudia - La Casa Nella Prateria January 12, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Your dolls are lovely and your blog so inspiring!

I “ran away” from a big city two years ago with my husband and my 2 (now 3) kids. We wanted to raise them in a different way, we wanted them to grow up in a more natural environment. We now live in the countryside and we go out every day, with any weather. Being outside is special for me because I grew up in a big city and, as a child, I spent a lot of time inside. I love watching my kids running free in the fields, playing with earth and mud, getting dirty, being so happy!

Mel January 13, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I just LOVE Kati–she is so sweet. And we don’t often think of butterflies as a species in danger, so I am glad she is speaking up for her butterfly kin.

I love everything about winter. i love looking out my window at icicles hanging off the shed. I love strapping on my cross-country skis and wandering around in the woods where it is quiet except for the sound of chickadees and crunching snow. I love how cute my boys look bundled up in their snow suits and hardly able to walk. I love sitting in hot springs next to a river coated in ice. I could go on, but you get the point. It is a time of reflection, but also invigoration.

Michelle January 15, 2010 at 5:01 pm

We love star gazing in the winter sky. The cold, crisp air makes the star seem brighter and there are so many of them. It makes us feel closer and more connected to the universe.

Marghanita January 19, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Thanks Mel, after reading your description it makes me want to run outdoors. Yes, a time for reflection but also invigoration. Thanks for sharing your love of winter.
