Today’s children can be tomorrow’s environmentalists…

I believe, if we instill a love of nature in children, they will want to protect it. First, we need to allow children to connect, enjoy, explore and play with nature.
5 simple ways a family can grow happy, healthy kids and keep the planet healthy and happy too!

Spend more time outdoors in nature. Let kids get up close and personal with nature.

Keep it simple and fun.

You don’t need a large garden or yard, you can grow potatoes, carrots and tomatoes in pots. Follow Chloe’s Gardening club.

Plant native wildflowers in your backyard and garden. Again you don’t need a backyard or garden, you can plant flowers in pots-even just a few flowers will attract bees and butterflies.

Here’s my FREE Earth Day activity sheets (Help kids learn about our pollinators with the help from The Little Humbugs).
Here’s a great post from Carole Brown on how to attract wildlife to your garden: Ecosystem Gardening

Walk or bike to and from school. If you have to drive to school-carpool or take the bus. Leave the car at home on weekends and go for a hike or get on your bike. (Adopt a Green Hour-check out NWF)

Nature is full of treasure that you can recycle and make into some really cool gifts or useful objects like:
A pine cone Bird Feeder-watch my video on how to make your very own ECO bird Feeder.

Pebbles and rocks make delightful gifts for loved ones.

I will be posting a video on how to make these cool HOT ROCKS next week so stayed tuned!

5 simple ways you and your family can make a BIG difference.
I’d love to hear what your doing for Earth Day, please leave a comment, thanks.

I interviewed this amazning 9 year old who is a budding environmentalist capturing attention from across the US. Small voices add up to big things. I just love how naturally these concepts and ideas of reuse and not creating waste come to children, as if it is just a part of their home environment. The importance of the planet and the power of the little things, like REUSING, add up to big things.
My son took the interview and shared it with his class http://kidskonserve.com/blog/post/Miss-Earth-Day.aspx
We’ll be transplanting a camellia my dad grew from seed many, many years ago. It will soon have a new home in my family’s yard. My 5 yo says it’s a good idea to do something the Earth would like on Earth Day (which he sees as the Earth’s birthday), such as recycling.
Hi Deb, your son sounds like he’s on his way to being one of tomorrow’s environmentalists-what a beautiful thing to do for Earth Day with your son and what a wonderful memory you will have of your father each time you glance at the beauty of the Camellia. Have a wonderful Earth Day with your family.
I’m with you–inspiring a love for nature will lead to a desire to protect it. I work in environmental education for many years and that was always my mission. Thanks for the great ideas!
Love this post Marghanita, thanks so much! My kids are so in tune with their Humbugs and share their love of nature. They keep telling me the world needs more trees and less buildings… and also say how much their Humbugs hate litter too. We’re always playing outside with them, whether it’s in the backyard, going hiking in the woods or collecting rocks at the beach. Thanks so creating such a fun-loving, adorable and inspirational toys! Keep up the great work, the world thanks you! Happy Earth Day!
p.s. those rocks are gorgeous, I’m sure we’ll be painting some soon for our rock garden!
Hi Lisa
How wonderful to hear the children are really enjoying The Little Humbugs. It fills me with so much joy knowing children are playing outdoors, connecting to nature, it makes all the hard work worth while. Thank you so much for sharing. A very Happy Earth Day to to you and your family too!
What a lovely post, Marghanita! My deepest wish is that everyone will follow these steps. We could make an enormous difference for the earth if we did. Your Earth Day activity sheets are really adorable. What a wonderful gift you’ve created. And thanks for the shout-out. That was very nice.
Thank you Carole, really appreciate your comments. I do believe there is a real movement-people do want change. Thank you for all that you do to help make this world a happier, healthier place to live.
