Let’s Go Outside Revolution

The Let’s Go Outside Revolution is about growing a generation of Happy Healthy Children by changing the way children spend their time. It’s a movement for you, your family and your community. If you care about your children and their future and the planets future, take this revolution and make it your own.

Why I felt compelled to start up this organization: Like so many, I have been connecting children with nature for most of my adult life.  My heart sank when I read that children spend 90% of their time INDOORS. As a mother and a naturalist this disturbed me deeply. I belief that we can change, the time is right, to reverse the time children spend indoors.

Dear Ms. Hughes:

“Congratulations.  This is the kind of initiative that should be occurring across Canada.  I support the Young Naturalists and Boy Scouts for the same reason.  I tell the story that when I was growing up in the 1950’s, six of us lived in a house of less than 1000 sq. ft. and my parents were always telling me to go outside and play.  Now we do the opposite”.

By making small changes-magical things happen!

The Let’s Go Outside Revolution is a non-profit organization run by a group of enthusiastic parents, teachers and individuals who believe that the time has come… for change.

Our mission:

To actively engage children with nature and reverse the time they spend indoors.

  • Children spend 90% of their time INDOORS.
  • Childhood OBESITY is an EPIDEMIC
  • Children aged 8-18yrs spend more than 7 hours a day in front of a screen.
  • 1 in 3 children in Canada are either obese or overweight. ADHD and other stress-related illnesses are at an all time high.

PLEASE HELP BY JOINING the “Let’s Go Outside” Revolution:

We are currently building a network of educators, parents, politicians and organizations who have the same passion for getting kids outdoors. We believe if we inspire a love for nature in a child, it will lead to a desire to protect it.

I am a proud member of the children and nature network . This fabulous organization will be celebrating their  “Let’s Go” campaign in April. Let’s G.O.! is a youth-inspired, youth-led Children & Nature Network initiative to rally people of all ages to Play, Serve and Celebrate.  Our “Lets Go Outside” Revolution launch party is one of the events taking place for this wonderful campaign.

Together, we can connect our children to nature and ensure that the next generation has the opportunity, the space, and the encouragement to “Go Outside and Explore Nature”

Let’s  give children back their childhood.

We ALL have a part to play in this revolution.

Our first episode in the series features Dr Kristina Towill.

Dr. Kristina Towill is a Registered Psychologist and a member of the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. She began her career in the Lower Mainland, as a school teacher and school counsellor. She now has a large private therapy practice in Kelowna, BC, where she treats individuals and couples contending with a wide variety of life stressors.  Dr. Towill regularly lectures to professional and community groups, on a breadth of psychological topics.  Children’s development and welfare continues to be a passion for Dr. Towill, personally and professionally. She lives with her husband and young daughters in the Okanagan Valley.

Join us on this revolution to give children their childhood back.

  1. My husband and I are planning soon to offer childcare services out of our home. He is retired ODNR, Division of Wildlife and I will be retiring soon as a county park director. It is our intent to design our outdoor fenced in play yard with natural play items, sunflower house, pebble garden, balance beams made of tree branches, boulder hill for climbing etc. Outside the fenced in area is where we will take field trips through the week. 300 acres that has a creek that merges to a larger stream, woods with trails, blackberries, buckeyes, jack in the pulpit, wild violets and a nice variety of wildlife and birds (even a bald eagle flies over from time to time.) Using our ProjectWILD facilitator training through ODNR we can use the games that they developed. We sincerely hope that this will attract parents who wish to draw their children outdoors and away from plastic toys and electronic sounds. We have a Facebook page – Millcreek Kids. 2. Hi Karen. Love, love, love this!!!! Your childcare service sounds wonderful. What an exciting adventure for you and your husband. I think it will be an enormous hit with families. What children wouldn’t want to run about on balancing beams, playing in the sunflower house, listening to the birds and collecting blackberries on the way to the creek. Oh my, I think I would like to play there too!!! This makes my heart sing Karen, what joy you and your husband will be giving to the children. Wishing you a beautiful Sunday and lots of fun and adventure with your delightful project. Here’s to getting children outdoors and experiencing the wonders of our natural world!

  3. Hi,
I am amazed and ecstatic about finding this site and organization. How can I be a part of this?
I am currently opening an alternative summer camp that I hope to evolve into a center called “Alive Adventures & Discovery Camp”. This camp is about being in your natural environment, hiking, camping, canoeing, nature connection arts and crafts, community drumming team sessions, and personal development and passion finding sessions. I would love to be a part of the “Lets go outside” initiative! I am starting my business in St. John’s NFLD!
    Looking Forward;
    Katie Power

  4. Hey Marghanita,
I would love to do a write-up about your efforts with The Outdoor Revolution on my blog. It’s AWESOME! Can’t seem to find an email for you… Will you shoot me and email so we can discuss. I’d love to help spread the word!

  5. Could your organization use an extra $1,000? The All Terrain Grant Campaign is now accepting applications for our July voting period. To learn more about the All Terrain Cares Grant Campaign please visit

  6. Would love to apply but we are based in BC Canada. Love what you guys are doing, thanks for thinking of us!! Here’s to getting more kids OUTDOORS!!!

  7. As an educator my hands are tied when it comes to having more outside play. The place I work with seems to cut back on our students outdoor play , every time a child gets a scratch . When one of our children fell off the bike , they took the bikes away . I know a lot of schools are afraid of being sued; We need to educate the parents how outside play is important to their education, mind, body and soul. Also I’m tired of parents having a cow every time their child falls down and gets a little scrape. I was always falling down when I was little. I’m still alive and healthy.
