OUTDOOR SPACES & CLASSROOMS
When children and nature mix, something magical happens. I am fortunate to witness that magic every day in our outdoor classrooms.
I believe the outdoor classroom, forest schools and outdoor playgroups are one of the ways forward in addressing our current “nature deficit disorder” crises.
Natural outdoor spaces ignite imaginations and stimulate creative play and learning
Children use their imagination to play with “loose parts”. An old tyre becomes a sailing boat or a witch’s cauldron.
Natural items such as sticks, foliage and stones become dens and fairy houses.
“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart.” ― Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods
We protect what we Love
Children need to be given the opportunity to “Fall in Love with Nature”
My outdoor nature art activities are based on the spirit of sharing and caring and connecting with our natural world.
All of which offer an ongoing learning process for all students and teachers.
For me, nature and creativity are inseparable and are part of who we are. We are nature and we are all born artists. Both nature and creativity help nourish our soul, creating the very essence of who we will become.
Felt Beaded Caterpillar and Butterfly Puppets: Learning the life cycle of the butterfly through Nature Art
Playing and creating using natural items found in nature helps children to understand our deep connection with the natural world and how we are part of nature too.
Mixing Earth Paints to use with our handmade paint brushes
The outdoor classrooms we create can be extended over the course of time to have a music and movement area. Increase the vegetable garden and add a critter home station and bird boxes for observation. Many of the outdoor preschools I visited in New Zealand had chickens and rabbits in their garden section.
