Squirrel Appreciation Day – Jan. 21

by Marghanita on January 21, 2010

We absolutely adore Squirrels and on this special day we would like to say “three cheers” to the Squirrels for their curiosity-bringing fun, laughter and inspiration into our lives.

Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens

My eldest (now 17yrs) first close encounter of a squirrel.

These beautiful Botanic Gardens became our back garden when we lived in a top floor flat in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. Every weekend my husband and I would walk 45 minutes to the gardens to get our nature fix.

In our backyard

We have squirrels visit our garden all year round here in BC, Canada. David Jnr still loves to watch the squirrels but usually from behind a lens- our kids love the challenge of photographing  these fascinating creatures.

Inspired On a Camping Trip by….. the little Red Squirrels

On one of our camping trips to Loch Inver, we had red squirrels visit our tent which inspired me to include the fluffy red creature in my first book series Toffee – Toffee Goes Camping. Red squirrels are an endangered species in Scotland and I wanted to bring this to the attention of the reader. Toffee the Wildlife detective.

So today, Squirrel Appreciation Day….GO OUTSIDE and see if you can spot a squirrel and be inspired!

One of those squirrels looks like he has a mohawk!

Thank you for sharing the adorable photos of your son from way back when! :) On a walk through the neighborhood this morning, we spotted a squirrel way up in a tree (we usually see them on the ground around here). A total treat!

HI Debi

Delighted you got to see a squirrel today. They are such clever little creatures. We have several that visit the garden. Last summer one ran along the top of the badminton net- wished I’d caught that on film!

Oh I love the pictures of your little boy. So sweet and full of wonder!

About a year ago my husband mentioned that he thought it was strange that we don’t see squirrels in the town we live in. Not even at the park where there is (what seems like) great habitat. Plenty of red squirrels in the woods, but none in town. Weird.

Happy squirrel day!
