World Environment Day June 5th

by Marghanita on June 4, 2009

World Environment Day (WED) 2010 is aimed to be the biggest, most widely celebrated, global day for positive, environmental action.
Commemorated on 5 June since 1972, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

2010 theme is ‘Many Species. One Planet. One Future.’ – a message focusing on the central importance to humanity of the globe’s wealth of species and ecosystems. The WED theme also supports this year’s UN International Year of Biodiversity.

Through WED, we are able to give a human face to environmental issues and enable people to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

The theme for WED 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change’. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

This year’s host is Mexico which reflects the growing role of the Latin American
country in the fight against climate change, including its growing participation in the carbon markets.

Getting kids involved …One great way to get kids actively involved is to let them plant a tree.
Tomorrow after school we are taking our kids to our small local garden center to purchase a tree of their choice to plant in celebration of World Environment Day.

Here’s last years native Maple being planted….

Planting Maple Tree last year

Trees are working for all of us to improve our environment and quality of life.

Here are some reasons why trees are important to us and our planet:

1. One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen to help us breathe better every year.
2. Trees help offset greenhouse gases from our cars and homes.
3. Trees keep our water clean and safe.
4. Trees are home, shelter and nourishment for animals.
5. In just one year, 40 trees will remove 80 pounds of air pollutants, reducing air pollution.
6. Trees provide welcomed shade in the summer.
7. Trees can make a home 20 degrees cooler.
8. One young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners
operating 20 hours a day.
9. Trees make us feel happy and improve our quality of life.
10. You can climb a tree and have hours of fun playing on a tree.

Plant a tree! Climb a tree! Hug a tree!
